RTG 2128 AccelencE
Starting in 2016 the DFG funds the Research Training Group RTG 2128 AccelencE (Accelerator Science and Technology for Energy-Recovery Linacs), which is a cooperation of the Institutes for Nuclear Physics of TU Darmstadt and of the Gutenberg University Mainz. AccelencE is focused on the development and first commissioning of so-called Energy-Recovery Linacs (ERLs) – these are particle accelerators, which regain the energy of the highly-accelerated particles, instead of loosing the energy by stopping in a wall. This is relevant for achieving highest beam powers in continuous operation at comparably little operational cost. AccelencE offers for the first time a structured promotion program in the research area of ERLs at German universities. Herein, doctoral researches can gain valuable practical experience from the first German ERL, Darmstadt's electron accelerator S-DALINAC, which is currently upgraded, as well as the planned ERL electron accelerator MESA at Mainz which is in construction. Emphasis is put on the strong synergies between the development of new accelerators and target and spectrometer developments.
